SteamSpy’s Creator: ‘2017 Was The Steam’s Most Profitable Year Yet’

By Muhammad Bilal Syahrir

Some titles like Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive are the game that gave the most contribution to the revenue.

According to Sergey Galyonkin, creator of SteamSpy, 2017 was the Steam’s most profitable year yet. The digital store has recorded revenue of US$4.3 billion in total. How did 2017 become Steam’s best year and what games gave the most contribution?

Steam’s most profitable year yet comes from none other than the contribution of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG. The game developed by Blue Hole Studio has sold close to 28 million copies, generating a total revenue of US$600 Million, according to Galyonkin.

Galyonkin also pointed out that statistic between the US and Asian market for PUBG. It shows that the Asian market contributed twice more sales than the US market. Although, as mentioned in our previous article, that PUBG had a decline in total players because of cheaters, somehow they were still able to be the most played game in Steam.

The other games that contributed highest in revenue were Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, with 12.5 million sales, and revenues of US$120 million. Followed by Grand Theft Auto V with 3 million copies and a total revenue of US$83 million.

Another interesting fact is that 50% of the total revenue on Steam was generated through sales of the top 100 games. The full list of top 20 games can be found in the image below:

The US$4.3 billion that Steam generated this year was almost US$1 billion more than 2016 which generated US$3.5 billion.

Keep in mind that the data generated by SteamSpy is 100% accurate. It collects data once per day from public Steam profiles based on the Web API provided by Valve.

Despite Its Total Players Declining, PUBG is Still The Most Played Steam Game

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) for the first time had a decrease in the total number of active players. However, despite the decline, PUBG is still the most played Steam game. So, what are the actual numbers? Find out in the article below.

It’s unfortunate that Galyonkin did not share the statistics of revenue generated by indie games (instead of Rocket League and Cuphead). Nevertheless, we can conclude that for the next years to come, Steam could have another year of high revenue, only if backed up by a hit game such as PUBG.
