Digital card game will become one of the next big things in the game industry. Although the number is still behind other popular genres such as battle royale and MOBA, the digital card games market will show the “slowly-but-sure” increase in the next two years.
The recent data from Superdata reports that the digital card games market will grow to US$ 1.5 billion at the end of 2018. The report also predicts that the number will increase to US$ 2 billion in 2020.
Among the top titles in the market, Hearthstone from Blizzard is the game that contributes most to this number. It contributes around US$ 414 million or 26.7% of the total market. We predict that the number will increase in the next 4 or 5 months from now as it recently released a major update, The Boomsday Project.
The United States is still the number one country in terms of the total digital card games players. Superdata reports that by the end of this year, there will be around 14 million players from the region.
For the platform, Superdata also reports that 71% of the digital card games players using their smartphone. Superdata summarizes that the “mobile-first design” is the key to success. It means that developers that make their game more mobile friendly gain more revenue than those who don’t.
Hearthstone already proved that by delivering more friendly interface and gameplay for mobile got it 26.7% of the total market. Not only that, by bringing Warcraft universe, Hearthstone can also attract the Warcraft players to try the game.
Become more popular through eSports tournament
The popularity of the digital card games is also boosted by some eSports tournaments. As we know, Hearthstone is one of the games that will be contested as an exhibition match in Asian Games 2018 Jakarta later this August. Shadowverse also starts gaining its popularity in the SEA, and one of the World Circuit already held in Singapore.
Following the Hearthstone and Shadowverse‘s popularity, there also some others digital card game that starts to attract players with its big name. Two of them are Gwent which comes from The Witcher universe and The Elder Scrolls: Legend.
Gaming industry giant, Tencent, will publish Magic: the Gathering games for Indonesia and other countries in Asia. Will they succeed overthrowing Hearthstone?
In the next year, the digital card game’s invasion will continue with some titles. One of them is Magic the Gathering Arena which already rolled out its closed beta phase. Not forget to mention Artifact, a digital card game from Dota 2 universe which will be released on November through Steam.
