The Steam summer sale was held around a month ago. But surprisingly, the number of Steam users has been decreasing drastically by more than 10% since January. What happened?
This report first came from Steam Spy creator Sergey Galyonkin. Galyonkin found that Steam was seeing a big decline in its users, both users who play the game and who open the Steam app in their computer. The drop is quite significant which is around 17% in January.
Galyonkin also said that 17% was the most significant number in the past three years. Last year, in the same period, Steam only lost around 9% of its users.
Actually, this is not a very strange phenomenon. According to the SteamDB data for the past three years, Steam user count reached its peak in January, and then declined or stagnated in the Summer (after summer sale). Then the number increased again toward the beginning of the new year.
The question is, what happened?
One of the reasons could be PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG). This title already reached its massive user peak earlier this year, and then slowly declined in the summer break. If we compare the user count since January 2018, PUBG already lost around 2 million users until now.
But Galyonkin was not quite sure about that. He said that PUBG might be one of the reasons behind the declining number. But, it couldn’t explain why the number of user decreases by more than 10% this year. Moreover, Steam already held one of its massive events, Summer Sale, that should be enough to minimize the decrease in the number of its users.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) for the first time had a decrease in the total number of active players. However, despite the decline, PUBG is still the most played Steam game. So, what are the actual numbers? Find out in the article below.
Although it decreasing a lot, there is still a hope that the number can increase again towards the end of the year. Moreover, there will be a lot of blockbuster title which will release in the last half of 2018 such as Monster Hunter World, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 or Battlefield 5. What do you think?
