The mobile game industry is rising. As the most populous country in Southeast Asia, definitely, Indonesia is one of the biggest game markets in the world. According to the Newzoo, in 2017 Indonesia has around 43.7% of gamers, with more than US$800 million revenue in a year.
How about mobile gamers? Gameprime.org already conducted an internal survey participated by 589 respondents. Most of them are millennials, who are between 13-24 years old.
In this article, we are trying to break down Indonesian mobile gamers’ state and taking a deep look at their behavior. Note that all the numbers are based on our private research. We have already released a survey participated by our gaming community in October 2018.
Reason to Play Mobile Game
The flexibility of time and place is the number one reason why gamers play mobile game. Nearly eighty percents of the respondents said that they play the mobile game because it can be played anywhere and anytime.
With some mobile games offer shorter session per game than other platforms, around 55% of the respondents said that they play it to fill their free time. Mostly they played mobile games when taking a short break in their daily routine, or while waiting for public transportation.
Around 45% of the respondents said that they play mobile games simply because they loved the gameplay. They like how mobile technology gives a new gameplay experience such as that provided by Pokemon GO.
The rise of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) in the world also affect Indonesian gamers. Around 93% of the respondents said that they are strategy/MOBA player, whether it is Mobile Legends, Arena of Valor, or Vainglory. Some of them also played a strategy game, such as Clash Royale or Clash of Clans.
Around 46% of the gamers said that they loved play Action/Adventure Genre. The shooter is the third most popular genre with 41.7% of the respondents. Thanks to the rise of the Battle Royale subgenre that was already made famous in Indonesia by titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battleground Mobile, FreeFire BattleGrounds, and Knives Out.
Online is the King
Although there is still some issue in the online connectivity (especially for mobile data), around 97% of Indonesian mobile gamers said that they prefer to play an online game rather than the offline ones.
This choice also affected by their favorite genre mentioned before. Most of the strategy/MOBA game and shooter game nowadays require the internet connection to play. The connection also needed to play the competitive and cooperative multiplayer.
Around 93% of the mobile gamers said that they are playing the mobile game on Android platform. This makes sense because the Android platform offers a more diverse device, and some of them are affordable (under IDR2 million). We will talk about this later on part 2 of this article.
Specific Gadget for Playing Game
Playing a game on mobile means that it will often disrupt our daily communications and vice versa. So, around 16% of the respondents decide to own a specific gadget to play a game, separate from their main device that is usually used for daily communications.
It also makes sense if they want to be a professional gamer. As a professional gamer, they need to play a mobile game at least 6-8 hours per day. So, owning a specific gadget is a logical and wise choice.
Some manufacturers like ASUS and Xiaomi announced their gaming smartphones (ROG Phone and BlackShark). So it will be interesting to see how this kind of device performs in the Indonesia market.
Nowadays, many games need more resource than before. A device with 1GB RAM or less can no longer handle it well anymore. But, surprisingly, 1.2% of the respondents said that they have a 1GB RAM device to play the mobile game.
With the more diverse choice and the price going cheaper and cheaper, it makes a device with at least 3GB RAM more affordable. This survey said that more than a half of the respondents now have at least 3GB RAM inside their device.
How about the file size? Around 70% of the respondents said that they have at least one game that has more than 500MB file size.
It also makes them need more storage inside their phone. More than 40% of the respondents said that they need at least 16GB of storage to play a game, especially if they want to play a multiplayer online game.
