Through Gamescom 2019, BEKRAF and AGI Ready to Bring Indonesian Games to Global Market

There will be 10 Indonesian game companies who will participate in Gamescom 2019 with the support from Archipelageek initiative.


Indonesian games will reach the global market through Europe’s biggest game convention, Gamescom 2019. It’s the goal that Indonesia Agency for Creative Economy (Badan Ekonomi Kreatif Indonesia/BEKRAF) and Indonesia Game Association (Asosiasi Game Indonesia/AGI) tries to achieve through the Archipelageek initiative.

Last Wednesday BEKRAF and AGI held a media briefing to spread the word to the media. The media briefing was attended by BEKRAF Infrastructure Deputy Hari Santosa Sungkari and BEKRAF Marketing Deputy Joshua Simanjuntak, as well as some of the delegations such as IESPL, Everidea Interactive, Wawa Games and Komodoz.

There will be 10 Indonesian game companies to exhibit their products in this annual event. They are Agate International, MassHive Media, Megaxus Infotech, Wawa Games, Ozysoft Studio, Touchten Games, Indonesia Esports Premier League (IESPL), Komodoz, Plexus & Oray Studios, and Everidea Interactive. They will exhibit their products and services under Indonesian pavilion which will be part of the Gamescom 2019’s B2B day from 20 to 22 August 2019.

“Archipelageek is a BEKRAF’s initiative to brings these digital and games innovator to expand its market to the world by participating in some major game events,” explained Joshua Simanjuntak. “At this time, we support them to participate in Gamescom, Cologne-Germany. Our big mission is to bring the Indonesian talents to the global market,” he continued.

“Indonesian game market is huge, but unfortunately, the Indonesian developers only get the 0.4% market share,” said Hari Santosa Sungkari. “One of our long-term goals is to increase the market share, as well as the investment in the game industry which now is only approximately USD3 million per year,” he continued.

What Indonesian companies can get through Gamescom 2019?

As one of the biggest game events in the world, surely Gamescom 2019 offers a lot of opportunity to the participants. One of them is to expand its network to discuss potential collaboration. “We’ve participated Gamescom for multiple times,” said Kris Antoni, the CEO of Toge Productions who also attended the briefing to share his experience. “Through Gamescom, we’ve met with one of the Nintendo representatives and became the first Indonesian developer who got the access to the Nintendo Switch development kit,” he continued.

“As a result, until now we’ve successfully published four Indonesian games to the global Nintendo Switch market,” he ended.

Not only game developers, but Gamescom 2019 hopefully can give a big impact to the eSports industry. “Esports now is the next big thing,” said Giring Ganesha, President of IESPL which is the only one delegate that comes from eSports industry. “My dream is to see Indonesian eSports athlete can have a good career path to the international eSports scene,”  he continued.

Game industry surely is a huge industry compared to the other entertainment industries such as movie and animation industries. “Video game has become the biggest entertainment media in the world with value worth around US$152 billion expected in 2019, or more than 2.5 times of movie industry,” said Cipto Adiguno, the President of AGI.

Indonesian Delegates’ Agenda at Gamescom 2019: From Business to Networking

Ten Indonesian game companies will exhibit their latest product at Gamescom 2019. Not only that, they will also expand their network to European market.

“Unfortunately, Indonesia is still young in this industry compared to the other veterans such as the US, China, and Japan. So, most of the product that we consume is foreign games which don’t contribute to the local companies’ revenue. We hope that Archipelageek program can open a new opportunity for stakeholders to reach the global market, and can grow to become a new power for Indonesia’s creative economy,” he continued.
