Sony Will Open its First Asia Studio in Malaysia Next Year

Expect more exclusive PlayStation titles come from this Malaysia studio in the future!


Big news came from Level Up KL 2019 taken place last week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Worldwide Studios announced that it will open its first Asia studio in Malaysia sometimes next year.

The announcement came from Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo. Mr. Gobind said that the partnership was one of the important steps to develop the game industry’s ecosystem both in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

“In the coming months, Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios will be establishing a studio right here in Malaysia,” said Mr. Gobind in his speech during the closing ceremony of Level Up KL 2019 Biz day last Friday, 8 November 2019.

The president of SIE Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida also came and felt happy with the newly announced partnership between the studios and the country.

Malaysia studios will be part of the SIE Worldwide Studios and surely the new studios will take part in the development of PlayStation first-party title. Also, the studio will open more opportunities for talent across Southeast Asia to level up their skills and become part of the AAA game development.

“Allow me to use the famous catchphrase that is widely associated with Sony PlayStation, Greatness Awaits!” said Mr. Gobind ended his speech.

The newly-announced studio will join another top studio that already established its studio in Malaysia. A day before Sony announced its Malaysia Studio, Larian Studios who is famous for its Divinity series also announced that it already opened its Malaysia Studio to develop Baldur’s Gate III.

Larian Studios’ founder himself, Swen Vincke also came to Level Up KL 2019 Biz to announce the new studio. Swen also said that now they were hiring for several positions to develop Baldur’s Gate III.

Indonesian and Malaysian Games Dominate SEA Game Awards 2019!

Gigabash from Passion Republic went home with three awards. Meanwhile, Indonesia's rising star, Retrograde Arena surprised everyone with two awards.

Hopefully, those newly-established and announced studios can attract more top studios to open their branches in Southeast Asia to leverage the game industry in this region.
